Choosing an Aged Care Provider in Ballina or Lismore: What to Look For
Once you or a family member has been assessed for aged care support, the next decision is choosing the right provider to deliver it. This is a bigger decision than most people realise, and it’s worth taking your time to get it right.
You’re choosing someone who will come into your home, support your daily life, and become a trusted part of your routine. Here’s what to look for.
You Have the Right to Choose
One of the most important things to understand about the Support at Home program is that you are in control. You choose your provider. You are not assigned one. And if something isn’t working, you can change providers.
This choice is yours to make, and a good provider will respect that from the very start.
What to Look for in a Provider
Local knowledge matters. A provider who is based in the Northern Rivers understands the area: the local services, the community groups, the geography between Ballina and Lismore, and the pace of life here. That local knowledge translates into better, more connected support.
Consistency of care workers. Ask any provider how they match care workers to clients, and how often those workers change. Seeing familiar, trusted faces matters enormously for dignity, comfort, and trust, especially for older people who may feel vulnerable.
Flexibility and responsiveness. Your needs will change over time. Your provider should be able to adjust your care plan without putting you through weeks of administration. Ask how quickly they respond when something changes.
Clear communication. You should always know who is coming, when, and what they’ll be helping with. A good provider keeps you and your family informed without you having to chase for updates.
Respect for your goals and preferences. The best aged care is not just about tasks. It’s about understanding what matters to you: staying independent, getting to your regular activities, keeping your social connections, or simply feeling at home in your own house. Your provider should ask about your goals, not just your limitations.
Registration and compliance. Make sure your provider is registered with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. You can check this at agedcarequality.gov.au. Registered providers must meet the Aged Care Quality Standards, which set out what good care looks like.
Questions to Ask a Provider Before You Start
Before you commit to a provider, ask them:
- Are you a registered Support at Home provider?
- Do you have support workers based locally in Ballina and Lismore?
- How do you match me with a care worker, and how consistent will that person be?
- What happens if my usual care worker is unavailable?
- How do I change my care plan if my needs change?
- How do I give feedback or raise a concern?
- What services do you deliver directly, and what do you coordinate through others?
A good provider will answer these questions clearly and without hesitation.
How Greater Support Approaches It
We’re based in the Northern Rivers and our support workers are local to Ballina and Lismore. When you start with Greater Support, we take time to get to know you before we start delivering care. We want to understand your routine, your preferences, and what a good day looks like for you.
We keep care workers as consistent as possible because we know that trust matters. And when your needs change, we adjust. We work with you, not around you.
We’re a registered aged care provider delivering in-home aged care services. We also support self-funded participants who prefer to arrange care outside the government system.
