How to Apply for the NDIS: A Step-by-Step Guide
How to Apply for the NDIS: A Step-by-Step Guide
Applying for the NDIS can feel like a big task. But when you know the steps and what to prepare, it is far more manageable than it looks. Here is the current process, so you know exactly what to expect.
Step 1: Check Whether You Are Likely to Qualify
Before you apply, it helps to understand the eligibility criteria. You need to be aged 0 to 64, be a citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent disability that substantially affects your daily life in at least one of these areas: self-care, communication, mobility, learning, self-management, or social interaction.
The NDIS looks at functional impact, not diagnosis severity. Some conditions automatically qualify, including intellectual disability, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, and autism at certain levels. There is also an early intervention pathway for children under 6 with developmental delay, or any age where early support can reduce future needs.

Step 2: Gather Your Evidence
The quality of your evidence shapes your outcome more than anything else. The NDIS wants to understand what daily life actually looks like for you, not just what condition you have.
The most useful evidence describes what you find difficult, how long tasks take you, what supports you already rely on, and what would happen without them. Functional assessments from occupational therapists, psychologists, and other allied health professionals carry significant weight.
Ask your specialists to write about function, not just diagnosis.
Step 3: Contact the NDIS
You can apply by phone on 1800 800 110 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm), online at ndis.gov.au/applying/how-to-apply, or through a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) in your area. LACs provide free help to prepare and submit your access request, use them.
Step 4: The Access Decision
The NDIS typically makes an access decision within 21 days of receiving a complete request. If you are approved, you move to planning. If not, you receive a written explanation and the right to an internal review, then to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal if needed. Many people who are initially declined go on to be approved with stronger evidence.
Step 5: Your Planning Meeting
Once approved, you meet with a planner or LAC to develop your NDIS plan, your goals, your supports, and your budget. From mid-2026, the NDIS is transitioning to a new planning model using the I-CAN v6 support needs assessment tool. If your planning meeting falls in late 2026, ask your LAC what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an NDIS application take?
The NDIS has a 21-day target from when they receive a complete access request. Having strong supporting evidence ready before you apply is the best way to keep the process moving.
What happens if my NDIS application is rejected?
You have the right to request an internal review within three months. Many rejections are overturned with better evidence. You can also appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.
Do I need a support coordinator to apply?
No. You can apply yourself by calling 1800 800 110 or visiting an NDIS office. A Local Area Coordinator can also help you through the process at no cost.
Step 6: Choose Your Providers
Your plan is approved. Now you choose who delivers your supports. Under changes from 1 April 2026, providers must be registered for the specific supports they deliver. Ask before you sign a service agreement.
