In-Home Aged Care in Ballina and Lismore: A Guide for Families

In-Home Aged Care Ballina Lismore - Greater Support

Watching a parent or loved one find daily tasks more difficult is not easy. You want to help, but you also want them to keep their independence, stay in their own home, and live life on their terms. The good news is that in the Northern Rivers, there is real support available, and you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

This guide is for families in Ballina, Lismore, and the broader Northern Rivers who are starting to explore in-home aged care options.

What is In-Home Aged Care?

In-home aged care is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of moving into a residential aged care facility, your loved one gets support delivered to them at home. A care worker visits regularly to help with whatever they need, whether that’s personal care, household tasks, or getting out into the community.

The goal is simple: help older Australians stay safe, comfortable, and connected in their own homes for as long as possible.

What Kind of Support is Available?

In-home aged care covers a wide range of support. The most common types include:

Personal care: Help with showering, dressing, grooming, and other daily routines. This is one of the most valued forms of support for older people who are starting to find these tasks more difficult.

Household support: Cleaning, laundry, vacuuming, and keeping the home safe and tidy. For someone with limited mobility, a clean and safe home makes a real difference to their quality of life.

Meal preparation: Help planning and preparing nutritious meals. This is especially important for people living alone who may not be eating well.

Transport and appointments: Getting to medical appointments, the pharmacy, or simply getting out of the house for a social outing. Staying connected to the community in Ballina and Lismore matters.

Social support: Regular visits, conversation, and companionship. Social isolation is one of the biggest risks for older people living alone, and consistent social support makes a genuine difference.

Allied health support: Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and other health services delivered at home or connected through your provider.

How is In-Home Care Funded?

Most in-home aged care in Australia is funded through the Support at Home program, which launched in November 2025 and replaced the old Home Care Package system. The government assesses your loved one’s needs and allocates a quarterly budget to fund their care.

To access this funding, you start with a My Aged Care assessment. You can begin that process by calling 1800 200 422 or visiting myagedcare.gov.au.

Private or self-funded in-home care is also available for those who want to arrange support without going through the government system.

What Should You Look for in a Provider?

Choosing the right provider matters. Here are the things that count most:

Local presence: A provider based in the Northern Rivers understands the community, the local services, and the geography. This is not something a national call centre can replicate.

Consistency of care workers: Your loved one deserves to see familiar, trusted faces, not a different person every visit.

Flexibility: Needs change. A good provider adjusts your care plan as your situation evolves, without bureaucratic delays.

Communication: You should always know what support is being delivered, when, and by whom. A good provider keeps the whole family in the loop.

Respect and dignity: This one is non-negotiable. The best in-home care workers treat your loved one as a whole person with preferences, history, and goals, not just a list of tasks to get through.

How Greater Support Can Help

We’re an aged care provider based right here in the Northern Rivers. Our support workers are local to Ballina and Lismore. They know the area, the community, and what matters to people living here.

We work with older Australians across a wide range of needs: personal care, household support, meals, transport, social connection, and more. We take time to get to know each person we support, what they enjoy, what they value, and how they want their days to look.

We’re a registered Support at Home provider, and we work with self-funded participants too.

Thinking About Next Steps?

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s completely normal. Most families are navigating this for the first time. We’d love to have a conversation about your situation, talk through your options, and help you work out what kind of support makes sense.

You don’t need to have it all worked out before reaching out. Just start the conversation.
