NDIS Community Participation in Ballina and Lismore: Getting Involved in Northern Rivers Life

NDIS Community Participation - Greater Support

The Northern Rivers is a genuinely great place to be connected. Ballina and Lismore have active local communities, events, sport, arts, volunteering, and groups of all kinds. If you have NDIS community participation funding, it’s there to help you get involved.

Here’s how community participation works through the NDIS and how Greater Support helps people in Ballina, Lismore, and the Northern Rivers make the most of it.

What is NDIS Community Participation?

Community participation is an NDIS funded support that helps you get involved in social and community activities. It is part of the Core Supports budget in your plan, under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation.

The idea is straightforward. Everyone benefits from being connected to their community. Community participation funding is there to make sure a disability does not stop you from doing the things you enjoy and the things that matter to you.

What Can Community Participation Funding Be Used For?

Community participation covers a wide range of activities. There is no fixed list. What matters is that the activity is meaningful to you and connects you with your community. Common examples include:

Social outings: Cafes, markets, cinema, sport, concerts, or simply getting out and about in Ballina or Lismore with support.

Recreational activities: Swimming, fishing, art classes, music, gardening, horse riding, or any sport or hobby you enjoy.

Volunteering: Getting involved with a local organisation or community group that aligns with your interests.

Group programs: Joining structured group activities with other participants, such as cooking groups, day programs, or social skills programs.

Learning and skill building: Taking a class, joining a club, or developing a skill that connects you with others.

Community events: Local festivals, markets, sporting events, and activities happening across Ballina, Lismore, and the broader Northern Rivers.

How Does Community Participation Support Work?

A support worker accompanies you to activities and events, providing whatever level of assistance you need to participate fully. This might mean physical support, communication assistance, transport, or simply being there as a familiar and trusted presence.

The level of support is flexible and built around what you actually need. Some people need hands-on help throughout an activity. Others just need transport and occasional assistance. Your support plan is tailored to you.

How to Find Activities in the Northern Rivers

The Northern Rivers has a lot going on. A few good starting points:

Your local council: Both Ballina Shire Council and Lismore City Council run community programs, events, and facilities open to residents.

Social Futures: A Northern Rivers-based community organisation with programs and connections across the region. socialfutures.org.au

Local Facebook groups and community noticeboards: Some of the best local activity connections happen through community networks.

Your support worker: If you work with Greater Support, your support worker is local and will have genuine knowledge of what is on in the area.

How Greater Support Helps with Community Participation

Our support workers are based right here in the Northern Rivers. They are not just familiar with Ballina and Lismore, they are part of these communities themselves. That makes a real difference when it comes to community participation.

We help participants:

  • Get to and from activities safely
  • Participate fully in the activities they choose
  • Build confidence in community settings
  • Find new activities that suit their interests
  • Connect with local groups, programs, and community networks

We work with self-managed, plan-managed, and NDIA-managed participants. Your community participation funding is there to be used. We help you use it well.
