NDIS and Disability Support in Ballina and Lismore

Living with disability in the Northern Rivers means navigating a system that was not always designed with regional communities in mind. The good news: the NDIS is available here, and with the right support around you, it can genuinely change what daily life looks like.

Here is what you need to know about NDIS and disability support in Ballina and Lismore right now.

The NDIS Is Here

The NDIS covers all of Ballina, Lismore, and the greater Northern Rivers region. Eligibility is based on your needs, not your postcode. To qualify, you need to be aged 0 to 64, be a citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent disability that substantially affects your daily life in at least one area: self-care, communication, mobility, learning, self-management, or social interaction.

The NDIS looks at how your disability affects your life, not the name of your diagnosis or how severe it looks from the outside. Some conditions automatically qualify, including intellectual disability, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, and autism at certain levels.

What the NDIS Can Fund for You

Once you have an approved plan, your funding covers three areas. Core Supports for day-to-day life, personal care, household tasks, community participation, and getting around. Capacity Building for things that grow your independence, therapy, support coordination, employment pathways, life skills. Capital for equipment and home modifications, and for those with the highest needs, specialist housing.

The Regional Context: What It Means for You

The 2022 Northern Rivers floods affected local providers significantly, and the region’s disability workforce is still under pressure. The NDIS Review acknowledged that regional areas face thin markets that policy alone cannot fix. What this means practically: engage providers early, ask whether they have workers genuinely based in your area, and plan ahead for known scheduling pressures.

The sector has 50% annual workforce churn nationally. Regional areas feel this most. A provider who is honest about their capacity is worth more than one who overpromises.

What Has Changed in 2025-26

  • New pricing (1 July 2025): The Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (PAPL) replaced the old Price Guide. Support worker rates rose by 3.95%. Standard weekday daytime rate: $70.23/hr.
  • Integrity rules (1 April 2026): Providing registration-required supports without registration is now a criminal offence. Ask your providers to confirm they are registered for what they deliver.
  • New planning model (mid-2026): Plans will be shaped increasingly by the I-CAN v6 assessment. Clear functional evidence matters more than ever.
  • Thriving Kids (1 October 2026): Children under 8 with autism or developmental delay move to a new funded pathway outside the NDIS. Talk to your LAC now if this affects your family.
