NDIS Support Coordination in the Northern Rivers: What It Is and How It Helps
If you have an NDIS plan and you see “Support Coordination” listed in your funding, you might be wondering what it actually means and what you’re supposed to do with it. You are not alone. Support coordination is one of the most misunderstood parts of the NDIS. Here’s a plain-English explanation of what it is, who it helps, and how to use it in Ballina, Lismore, and the Northern Rivers.
What is NDIS Support Coordination?
Support coordination is a funded NDIS support that helps you understand and use your NDIS plan. A support coordinator works with you to connect you with the right providers, set up your services, and make sure your plan is working the way it should.
Think of a support coordinator as someone in your corner who knows the system, knows the local providers, and helps you navigate both. They are not a support worker. They don’t deliver direct care. Their job is to make sure everything around your plan is organised and that you are getting the right support from the right people.
What Does a Support Coordinator Do?
A support coordinator helps you with the practical and administrative side of your NDIS plan. This includes:
Understanding your plan: Going through what your funding covers, what each support category means, and how to get the most from your plan.
Finding and connecting with providers: Identifying providers in Ballina, Lismore, and the Northern Rivers who can deliver your supports, and helping you compare your options.
Setting up your services: Coordinating the logistics of getting your supports started, including service agreements, rosters, and scheduling.
Problem solving: When something is not working, your support coordinator helps you work out what to do, whether that means changing a provider, requesting a plan review, or finding an alternative support.
Preparing for plan reviews: Your support coordinator can help you document how your supports are going and what you want in your next plan.
Crisis support: If things go wrong, your support coordinator can help you access short-term options while a longer-term solution is put in place.
Who Gets Support Coordination Funding?
Not everyone receives support coordination funding in their NDIS plan. It is typically included for participants who have more complex needs, are new to the NDIS, or whose situations make it harder to navigate the system independently.
There are two levels of support coordination in the NDIS:
Support Coordination (Level 2): The standard level. Helps you understand your plan, connect with providers, and use your funding effectively.
Specialist Support Coordination (Level 3): For participants with more complex or higher-risk situations. Delivered by a qualified specialist.
If your plan does not include support coordination but you feel you need it, raise it at your next planning meeting. Bring evidence of why it would help you manage your plan more effectively.
How to Find a Support Coordinator in Ballina or Lismore
There are several registered support coordination providers operating in the Northern Rivers. The NDIA has offices in both Ballina (Unit 5, 274 River Street, phone 1800 522 679) and Lismore (Level 1, 29 Molesworth Street, phone 1800 522 679) who can also provide guidance.
To find a registered support coordinator, you can use the NDIS Provider Finder at ndis.gov.au or ask your LAC for local recommendations.
When choosing a coordinator, look for someone who knows the Northern Rivers provider landscape well and who communicates clearly. Your coordinator should help you feel more confident about your plan, not more confused.
