Supported Independent Living (SIL) in the Northern Rivers: What It Is and How to Get It

Supported Independent Living SIL - Greater Support

For NDIS participants who need a higher level of daily support, Supported Independent Living, known as SIL, is one of the most significant supports the scheme funds. If you or someone you care for in Ballina, Lismore, or the broader Northern Rivers is thinking about SIL, this guide will help you understand what it is, who it suits, and how to get it.

What is Supported Independent Living?

SIL is funded support that helps you live as independently as possible, with assistance available when you need it. It is usually delivered in a home shared with other NDIS participants, though it can also be delivered in your own home depending on your needs and plan.

The key idea behind SIL is that you live your life in your own space with the right support available, rather than in a traditional care facility. The goal is independence, skill building, and community connection, with support workers there to assist as much or as little as you need.

What Does SIL Include?

SIL support covers the help you need to manage daily life at home. This typically includes:

Personal care: Help with showering, dressing, grooming, and personal routines, delivered at the times your routine requires.

Household tasks: Cooking, cleaning, laundry, and keeping your home safe and comfortable.

Skill building: Working with you to build independence over time, whether that means learning to cook, manage a budget, use public transport, or participate in community activities.

Community participation: Getting out in Ballina, Lismore, and the Northern Rivers to social activities, groups, appointments, and places you enjoy.

Overnight support: For participants who need assistance during the night, SIL can include overnight or 24/7 active support depending on your assessed needs.

Medical and health support coordination: Connecting you with allied health, clinical care, and other services as part of your overall support plan.

Who Is SIL For?

SIL suits participants who need regular, ongoing support with daily tasks, often because of the nature of their disability, their health needs, or their goals for independence. It is typically for people who need more support than occasional assistance, but who want to live in a home environment rather than a residential facility.

You don’t need to be in crisis or have extremely high needs to access SIL. If you want to live more independently and need consistent daily support to do that, SIL may be the right fit.

How Do You Access SIL Through Your NDIS Plan?

SIL is funded differently from most NDIS supports. It is not automatically included in your plan. Here is how the process works:

Your NDIS plan must include SIL funding. If you believe SIL is the right support for you, raise it with your NDIS planner or LAC at your next planning meeting. Bring evidence of your support needs, such as a letter from your doctor, allied health professional, or current support provider.

Once SIL is included in your plan, you work with a provider to develop a support needs assessment and a roster of care that matches your needs and budget.

Your provider submits a detailed proposal to the NDIA for approval. This process can take time, so it helps to start conversations early and work with a provider who knows the process well.

If you have a support coordinator, they can guide you through this process and help you find the right SIL arrangement in the Northern Rivers.
