Are you a Logan resident looking to transition from high school to paid employment? If so, the NDIS school leaver employment support scheme may be the right option for you. In this article, we’ll outline the basics of obtaining school leaver employment support through the NDIS, how it differs from Centrelink’s traditional disability employment schemes, and what School Leaver Employment Support can offer you when transitioning from school to work.

What is NDIS School Leaver Employment Support?

NDIS school leaver employment support is a service available through the NDIS. Eligible participants can engage in School Leaver Employment Support to help with the transition from school to part-time or full-time employment.

Who Can Access School Leaver Employment Support?

This service is available to anyone from around the age of 15 (in year 10) to 22 years old, who has qualified for the support services under the NDIS.

How is NDIS School Leaver Employment Support Different to DES?

While school leaver employment support is similar to Disability Employment Support provided in job plans through Centrelink and other services, this is an early intervention bridging program. NDIS School Leaver Employment support is only available to NDIS participants who are deemed ineligible for the DES system.

Rather than assessing people based on their capacity to work and economically support themselves, school leaver employment supports focus on life skills outlined by you and your family. The bar is a lot lower for this system.

What does NDIS School Leaver Employment Support look like?

Just as everyone’s disability is different, so too is their pathway to employment. School Leaver Employment Support understands that sometimes when you’re finished school, you’re not always ready for employment straight away.

It takes time to decide what field or industry you’re most suited towards, and allows for that experimentation through volunteering and work experience. Other pathways to employment offered through school leaver employment supports may include:

  • Developing a routine
  • Accessing public transport with the assistance of a support worker
  • Resume preparation and interviewing skills workshops
  • Building confidence to overcome barriers to employment
  • Money handling and budgeting
  • Communication skills
  • Independent living and other vocational skills needed to transition to the DES scheme
  • Improving team building skills
