Supported Independent Living in Logan – Is SIL Right for You?
Living independently matters. Having a home that feels like yours, where you make your own choices, set your own routine, and live your own life, is something everyone deserves.
For some people with disability, getting there takes a bit more support. That is exactly what Supported Independent Living is for.
If you are in Logan and wondering whether SIL might be right for you, this guide explains it in plain language.
What Is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS funding category that pays for the support you need to live in your own home or shared accommodation. It covers the cost of support workers who help you with day-to-day tasks, not the rent or the house itself, but the people who are there to help you live well in it.
SIL is one of the more complex parts of the NDIS, but at its heart the idea is simple: you deserve to live as independently as possible, and if you need support to do that, the NDIS can fund it.
Who Is SIL For?
SIL is generally for people who need regular support throughout the day or overnight, or both. This might include support with:
- Personal care such as showering, dressing and grooming
- Meal preparation
- Managing medications
- Household tasks
- Getting out in the community
- Overnight assistance or active overnight support
SIL is not for everyone with a disability. It is typically funded for people with higher support needs who could not safely or comfortably live without regular assistance. If your support needs are lower, other NDIS supports such as in-home support hours or Individualised Living Options (ILO) might be a better fit.
What Does SIL Look Like Day to Day?
SIL can look different depending on your needs and the type of accommodation you choose.
Some people in SIL live in shared houses with two or three other participants. Support workers are rostered across the house, which means support is available when you need it.
Others live in their own place, with support workers coming in at set times, morning, evening, or overnight, depending on their plan.
The goal of SIL is not to do everything for you. A good SIL provider focuses on building your skills and confidence over time, so that you can do more and more for yourself, on your own terms.
How Does NDIS Funding Work for SIL?
If you think SIL is right for you, it needs to be included in your NDIS plan. SIL is funded under the Assistance with Daily Life support category.
Getting SIL funding approved usually involves:
- An occupational therapy assessment to document your support needs
- A SIL quote from a registered provider
- A review by the NDIA to determine that SIL is the most appropriate option for you
This process takes time. If SIL is something you want to explore, it is best to raise it well before your next plan review. If you are not sure whether your plan currently includes SIL funding, your support coordinator or LAC can help you check.
What Should You Look for in a SIL Provider in Logan?
Choosing a SIL provider is a significant decision. Look for a provider who:
- Is registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission
- Has experience supporting people with needs similar to yours
- Involves you in decisions about your home, your routine, and your support workers
- Has clear processes for managing rosters, incidents and communication with families
- Treats your home like your home, not a service setting
