Independent living services have come a long way for disabled youth with the introduction of the National Disability Scheme (NDIS), but there’s still not a lot of information out there about the independent living services Logan youth can access.

In this article, we aim to simplify independent living services by identifying three services that may be of use to you when contemplating leaving home.

Queensland Government & NDIS

In conjunction with schemes such as the NDIS, youth have more choice surrounding independent living services and arrangements. Some of the resources available on the Queensland Government website include:

  • Supported Disability Accommodation – where youth needing support live in an apartment or house provided by disability organisations such as MS Queensland or Uniting Care with access to personal carers and support workers as required.
  • Share housing – this option follows the more traditional share-house model, with the opportunity to share with able-bodied residents under dual tenancy agreements, or in their own home with a live-in support worker.
  • Supported Independent Living – Supported independent living through the NDIS allows eligible participants to choose support workers based on your care needs.
  • Assistive technology – Assistive technology can make all the difference when living independently. Through the NDIS, you can receive home modifications and access to technology such as remotely controlled products and other items such as walkers or wheelchairs to makes independent living easier.
  • Rental assistance – to facilitate moving out of home.

Sporting Wheelies

While it’s not what would first come to mind when thinking about independent living services, Logan residents can’t deny that one of the biggest hurdles to overcome when living independently for the first time is socialisation. From their head office in Albion (just half an hour from Logan), Sporting Wheelies has been connecting disabled adults and children with a sport that matches their skills and personality for over 40 years.

Not only does this help Logan residents improve or maintain their fitness with regularity, it also helps you to develop key social skills such as communication, time management and teamwork – which are essential when living independently.

Workshops, Webinars and Resources

Independent living services you may not think about are workshops, webinars, and online resources. Various disability and community organisations such as Montrose offer workshops focused on improving life skills you may not consider until you move out of home.

Some of the best independent living services workshops for disabled youth are the ones that focus on preparing for moving out of home. Topics include:

  • Budgeting
  • Shopping
  • Meal plans and cooking – both a basic version and one adapted from Jamie Oliver cookbooks using five ingredients

Similarly, MS Queensland also offers a variety of free online workshops and resources to help people manage their disability in out-of-the box ways. Some topics covered include:

  • Mindfulness and yoga (including a focus on chair yoga, mindfulness for children)
  • Nutrition and eating healthily with MS and other disabilities
  • Exercise options (both at home and exercise programs that can be adapted to gyms)
  • Virtual wellness program – focusing on a variety of subjects covering everything from COVID to employment and working from home

When discussing independent living services, the services you need to access are often down to your individual wants, needs and requirements, particularly when it comes to choosing support workers. Hopefully, this list has given you a starting point of resources and things you need to consider when moving out of home for the first time.
